Grow up!

August 26, 2014 By Lindsay Curren

Vertical Gardening
Low Tech vertical gardening a ala Mark Risdill Smith.

A piece depicting the possibilities in vertical gardening.

I’m one who values more low-tech solutions to the vertical gardening question, rather than the whiz-bag and energy-heavy solutions that look at this question through a more Buck Rogers futuristic approach.

It’s not that I don’t appreciate what some tech-y solutions can do for us, especially as we transition. But ultimately I’m looking for how we can do things without intensive energy inputs rather than utterly dependent on them, as in cities of skyscrapers growing food.

I’m skeptical. And I think we need more engagement of our heads, hearts, and hands and not more ways to push buttons and fuggetaboutit!

To that end, this piece, depicting the garden of world-famous vertical gardener Mark Risdall Smith is about making your back yard come alive, wherever it is, and no matter how small. For me, “grow up” in this regard has more than one meaning that I hope anyone with a climate consciousness and a conservation bent we can all appreciate.
