Originally designed by Barbara Tanner exclusively for her own Le Dauphin Design firm (apparently now-defunct), this high-end, upholstery-weight, American-made “Green Dragon” fabric reflected her interest in Asian ceramics and her desire to bring that look to beach umbrella and tote bag designs, each of which sold for $595 in 2007.
The print features a swirly, scaly dragon holding a burnt orange ball surrounded by dreamy, otherworldly clouds.
Use these gorgeous and expressive dragon fabric scraps for a pillow front or tote bag front, while using complimentary fabrics for the backs. Could also be worked into a pieced design — wall hanging or heavier-fabric quilt.
Not waterproof, but water resistant, the fabric appears to be mostly cotton with either a bit of a poly (nylon or other strengthening fiber) and/or a slight coating, or just a strong weave. It does NOT come off as a synthetic and I believe it is mostly if not all cotton.
COLORS: On a minty-tealish background are jade, black, and burnt orange.
SIZE: The dragon in pieces A, B, & C is 18″ w x 12.5″ tall. The dragon in Piece D is 14″ w x 9″ tall.
Piece A: 26.25″ W x 38.5″ L
Piece B: 27.25″ W x 38.5″ L
Piece C: 25″ W x 39.75″ L
Piece D: 36″ W x 16″ L
CONDITION: All are perfect in fiber strength and color. There is one extremely small and nearly imperceptible slight stain/discoloration on each but it is more than far enough away from the dragon to not been seen on a pillow front or tote bag (would end up in the seam) and will likely come out with minimal treatment.
MAKER: Barbara Tanner’s unique Le Dauphin Design products and personally designed fabrics were highly regarded, being featured in top magazines like Oprah, Architectural Digest, and more in the early aughts.
SUSTAINABILITY: ALL my packaging except tape is 100% re-used. Your invoice is available digitally in your account. I source vintage items and resources (or in this case, discontinued stock that’s 8 years old) either as they are, or to upcycle into new products, giving them a new life. This reduces demand on current resources, preserves history, and keeps valuable items out of the landfill, all of which asks just a little bit less out of our ever-giving Mother Earth. Etsy buys carbon offsets for all shipping, which is a win-win for the sustainability-minded shopper.
Everything from a smoke-free and pet-free studio.
