FABRIC/FIBER: 100% cotton.
SIZE: Twin sized (76″ wide including fringe tip to fringe tip x 101″ long including fringe edge at bottom). Side motifs are motif 14.5″ high x 6″ across; Oval lozenges are 11.5″ wide x 15″ high; Birds range from 3″ to 6″; Fruit is 1.5-2″; Flowers range from as small as 1″ to up to 4.5.
COLORS: Bright white background flecked in black in the screen printing style. Chartreuse, olive green, seafoam green, celadon, black, French blue, purple.
CONDITION: Nearly perfect for its 50+ year old age. You may find the occasional very small discoloration, but so infinitesimal as to be inconsequential given its vintage age. Possible spot treatable (this has been cleaned, but not specifically spot treated) may help if you can find any discolorations at all.
ALTERNATIVE USE: Could also be deconstructed for fabric, especially using the lozenges for oval pillows, etc., but be mindful that this is a loose cotton weave bedspread fabric with lots of drape and movement — you’d want stabilizer to repurpose into bags or pillows.
1970s Fieldcrest Bird and Fruit Twin Sized Bedspread
Set the scene for the ultimate throwback bedroom with one or both of these vintage bird bedspreads.
The trippy illustrative style of the late 1960s/early 1970s is on full and fun display in this screen printed cotton bedspread by Fieldcrest.
On the center of the spread, peacocks, partridges, and bluebirds perch among the branches of dually fruiting trees (holding unnaturally colored and outsized pears, apples, plums, and cherries) in repeating egg-shaped lozenges across the spread. In another repeating lozenge, the peacock stands alone before a wildly flowering tree boasting several flower types — poppies, chrysanthemums, roses, Lysiantha — in the same HOT 60s fashion colors.
In between the oval lozenges are peonies with abstracted buds sticking off of it.
On the side of the spread going all the way around the foot of the bed, a repeating motif 14.5″ high and 6″ across is of a rose-flowering tree also bearing pears with a pigeon or partridge standing proudly at its base, two outsized and exaggerated flowers and a butterfly flanking either side.
The entire spread (except at the top where your pillow is tucked) is decoratively trimmed in knotted and hanging fringe.
