My Beautiful Ugly Packaging

November 25, 2020 By Lindsay Curren

"Beauty is as beauty does" — Chaucer in The Wife of Bath's Tale (c. 1387) (Originally "Handsome is as handsome does.") The other day an ad for "sustainable" branded packaging passed through my Instagram feed. The eye candy hooked me, and I clicked through. On their About page the company, Noissue, says they were founded ...to provide makers, brands and businesses of all sizes access to … [Read more...] about My Beautiful Ugly Packaging

Pope Francis’s climate encyclical

June 23, 2015 By Lindsay Curren

In my life there are two things that have the effect of at least somewhat isolating me from others. The first is being a writer on climate change, peak oil, and the economic crises bound up with those modern predicaments. The other is being a Christian environmentalist. In the first case, my essays, as well as my social media presence, fairly well run counter to the whole of my society and … [Read more...] about Pope Francis’s climate encyclical

Getting my pilot's license

October 22, 2012 By Lindsay Curren

Letterpress Card

Ever since we first got together my husband and I have talked about how to respond to one of our key shared interests — peak oil. For us this means, first of all, a conservation-minded approach to life — using less energy, wasting less, and relying on reusable materials such as hankies and eco-cups, carrying our own grocery bags, and growing much of our own food and cooking it ourselves. But … [Read more...] about Getting my pilot's license

September 26, 2011 By Lindsay Curren

Bike Barrette

My effort to use less doesn't always come easily. As a product of my own over-consuming and unconscious society, I'm constantly forced to bring more awareness to my actions to avoid the hyper-consumption of the industrial economy. This is made no easier by being immersed in a culture that constantly tells me to... Take the easy way out Live the high life Get a newer/better/shinier … [Read more...] about Elbow grease on the industrial economy

Don’t greenwash me, Talenti

July 22, 2011 By Lindsay Curren

Bike Parade

There's a saying that if something seems too good to be true, it probably is. Temptations Recently I fell in love with a new ice cream brand—actually, a gelato—called Talenti. These folks have churned out a small selection of the most delightful and imaginative flavors with a rich texture and perfect finish. Of their thirteen gelato flavors I've now tried five, which were each perfetto! My … [Read more...] about Don’t greenwash me, Talenti

SodaStream and save the planet?

July 20, 2011 By Lindsay Curren

Bottle Popper

The title might be an exaggeration, but using a SodaStream to make “fizzy” water, sparkling tea, and cola has reduced the plastic bottles and metal cans I use and recycle. It’s also kept money from leaving my purse. Editor’s Note: This is a guest post on Lindsay's List. If you're a friend of Lindsay's, a friend of energy conservation, or just have an idea to help women live locally with a smaller … [Read more...] about SodaStream and save the planet?
