Recently my hubby made me promise that wherever we go, we’ll do our level best to eat at whatever taco places are there.
Heaven knows why?
I had no idea that he was such an unstinting taco fan. I mean the guy’s a Slavic-Irish mix and I don’t recall him wanting to make a bee-line for Paddy O’ Kowalski’s Kielbasa and Haggis Hut.
But tacos? Apparently a must-do.
So, as the inaugural review of Virginia taco places I’m starting with The Soup & Taco Etc., a slim-line, urban hole-in-the-wall on lower Caroline Street in Fredericksburg’s downtown, a couple of blocks from the river.
We popped in for a lil snack after a long tour at the Fredericksburg Battlefield where raging heat and humidity left us flagging and famished.
I didn’t want to spoil our dinner at Spencer Devon Brewing Company later that night, so insisted we only get one taco order to share.
I got chicken, he got beef. We split chips and a pretty spicy salsa served to the table gratis.
Muy bueno
In short, and with only a small sampling, their Tex Mex was purdy awesome. Plus the dive-y nature of the place, along with super friendly service, added to the authentically unpretentious vibe.
We snarfed it down and would have had more if not for that night’s plans.
According to the Website, they’re the, “best tacos in Fredericksburg, ” and they, “serve traditional Mexican and Tex-Mex food, as well as different Latin American dishes.”
If the Friday afternoon 2pm crowd was any indication, the place is beloved.
Here’s a link to their menu.
It’s the kind of place where a girl can be a hungry girl without worrying about appearances — so, like, a fifth date place for slowly moving affairs or a first date place for soul mates who don’t care about stuff like dripping salsa on your chin and food served in wax-paper lined plastic netted boats.
AKA, my kind of mom & pop shop. (It definitely seemed to be family owned and operated by a close-knit group.)
They serve inside and on a few tables out front. When crowded, there’s definitely limited seating and a line but it’s fast-ish food so the wait’s no real pain.
Viva!
